Finding Secondary Sources

Secondary Sources include the following legal resources:

  • Legal encyclopedias
  • Treatises
  • Legal periodicals
  • Law reviews

These resources

  • Provide interpretations and well-reasoned statements of the law; 
  • Can be used as persuasive authority.
  • Are good starting points when you are unfamiliar with particular topics or practice areas; and
  • Reference important case law and statutory authority in addition to journal and law review citations.

There are a few ways to search for law reviews within Nexis Uni. 

  1. Searching by keyword within the search box at the top of the page. Selecting the Law Review content collection from the left panel. 
  2. Adding the Law Reviews and Journals filter to your search. See the Advanced Search page for more information on adding search filters. 
  3. Use the Legal Advanced Search Template and select 'Law Reviews and Journals.'
  4. Use the Guided Search box. Select Law Reviews and conduct your search. 
  5. Browse Law Reviews and Journal sources by selecting Menu > All Sources. Select Law Reviews and Journals from the Category box in the left panel. 

There are a few ways to search for news sources within Nexis Uni. 

  1. Searching by keyword within the search box at the top of the page. Select the News or Legal News content collection from the left panel. 
  2. Adding the News or Legal News filters to your search. See the Advanced Search page for more information on adding search filters. 
  3. Use the News Advanced Search Template. 
  4. Use the Legal Advanced Search Template and select Legal News. 
  5. Use the Guided Search box. Select News and conduct your search. 
  6. Browse News or Legal News sources by selecting Menu > All Sources. Select News or Legal News from the Category box in the left panel. 

One method of finding forms is to search within specific treatises. You can locate these treatises by selecting Menu > All sources. The sources are organized alphabetically. 

Treatises

  • USCS Federal Rules Annotated
    • Provides access to Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure, Federal Rules of Evidence, and more.
  • Moore's Federal Practice - Civil

 

Alternatively, you may conduct a keyword search and narrow down by Law Reviews and Journals > Treatises or Practice Guides. It is also recommended to narrow down by Practice Area & Topic.

To locate Restatements of the Law, select Menu > All sources. Select Law Reviews and Journals from the left panel. Select Restatements under Category.

To locate Jurisprudence, select Menu > All sources. Select Law Reviews and Journals from the left panel. Select Jurisprudence under Category.
