SSBS Diversity Committee Mission

The NU SSBS Diversity and Community Committee is committed to welcoming and celebrating all who are diverse in age, nation of origin, ethnicity, culture, ability, race, health status, religious and spiritual practices, immigration status, language, gender identity or expression, and sexual orientation. We value respectful dialogue and collaborative discussions that serve to educate and promote an inclusive environment for the NU SSBS community. This Committee aims to serve SSBS administrators, staff, faculty, and students by treating all members of the community with respect, equity, and appreciation and by committing to assisting NU in its larger mission to be an inclusive and diverse learning environment. The Committee exists to promote and strengthen efforts towards equity, inclusion, and social justice in the NU SSBS community, consistent with recommendations from our accrediting bodies, to support and train our students in the helping professions. Our primary objective is to assess and improve the quality and breadth of diversity considerations within the SSBS community through faculty and student engagement.

Inclusion, a Cat Cafe, and Unforeseen Challenges
This presentation, brought to you by the SSBS Diversity Committee, is an insightful discussion about some of the unforeseen challenges encountered when opening up a new small business within a volatile backdrop of State legalization of discriminatory practices. Indiana, along with other States, have proposed, and in some cases passed legislation that allows business owners to refuse service based on religious conviction, with unintended consequences for all. This presentation and discussion looks at these issues and their impact in an engaging way as presented by NU psychology doctoral student, Eric Hubbard, M.LD.
Responding to Weariness: How Social and Behavioral Sciences Training Better Prepares Us to Respond to Social Discord
For a variety of reasons, 2020 has presented a myriad of challenges. These challenges have impacted us both personally and professionally. Moderated by Drs. Eating Disorders in Adolescents - Loretta Good
This webinar addressed misconceptions about eating disorders (EDs), general information about EDs, along with how we can be culturally sensitive with our clients. This webinar also touched on EDs in males, African Americans, and Asians. Additionally, the effects of EDs on families, treatment of EDs, and recovery from EDs were discussed.
Examining Diagnostic, Treatment, and Support Disparities for Black Autistic Children - Danielle Sterling
Presenter Danielle Sterling shares her experiences completing an internship exploring the intersection of race and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The disparities in diagnostics, treatment, and essential supports for Black children with ASD are discussed, along with suggestions for improvements in the future.
Minority Stress in the LGBTQ+ Population: Implications for Healthcare Providers - April Bandy-Taylor
There is a relationship between minority stress (based on Meyer's model) and negative physical/mental health outcomes in the LGBTQ+ population. It is important for healthcare providers to acknowledge and understand these inequities and the long-term impacts they may have on health in order to better meet the needs of their patients/clients. In addition to providing culturally appropriate care, providers should become advocates for their sexual minority and gender diverse patients/clients and seek out additional training opportunities to better understand their own implicit biases.
The Psychological Impact of Racial Microaggressions - Teresa M. White
Teresa M. White, Doctoral Student in SSBS (IO/Psychology), defines micro-aggressions and the context of micro-aggressions. The influence of micro-aggressions on psychology are discussed.
The Suicide Epidemic in American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) Communities - Dr. Ezra Lockhart
Although the suicide rate for all AI/AN people in the U.S. is undoubtedly high, this general data on AI/AN suicide does not reflect widespread variations in suicide by region and tribe. AI/AN high school students also have higher rates of serious thoughts of suicide, suicide plans, and suicide attempts overall, with AI/AN females having higher rates of these behaviors than AI/AN males. AI/AN communities face a perfect storm of these and other factors that may contribute to the formation and spread of suicide clusters among youth.
Systemic Approaches in Affirmative Therapy with Aging LGBTQIA+ Clients - Kyle Lucas
This webinar examined systemic approaches in affirmative therapy with LGBTQIA+ clients by reviewing an overview of the contexts relevant to aging LGBTQIA+ clients including heterosexism, families-of-origins/families-of-choice, HIV/AIDS Crisis/Cohort of Loss, internalized gay ageism, intersectionality, and location of self/self-of-the-therapist in working with aging LGBTQIA+ clients.
