CoLPS: Legal Studies

This guide contains legal resources available in the NU Library.

The Bluebook

There are very few books which cause as much anxiety to law students as The Bluebook.

The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation, is the style manual that is used to cite legal documents.  Now in it's 20th edition, it is over 500 pages of information on legal citation.  At first, it is a real challenge for the aspiring lawyer and every lawyer needs to know how to use it.

However, most of The Bluebook is redundant.  You can ignore more than two-thirds of it if all you're doing is citing cases and statutes - that covers the first year of law school and most litigation.  Actually, if all you're concerned with is the law, cases, and litigation, you can find many of your answers in the cheat sheet on the inside back cover.
