Emily Spranger is a doctoral candidate pursuing a Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership at NU. Emily recently contributed as an author in Student Well-Being and Empowerment: SEL in Online Graduate Education. In that recent publication, she collaborated with Dr. Maggie Broderick and Dr. Amy Lyn. Emily has also contributed as a peer reviewer for IGI Global Publishing. She has presented at the Illinois Political Science Association Conferences and, most recently, the Online Learning Consortium Conference. She presented Shaping an Empowering Path with SEL in Adult Online Education at the OLC Accelerate 2023 Conference, partnering with Dr. Amy Lyn. Previously, Emily served in PK-12 dance education in Arizona and Illinois. Emily also served as the President of a non-profit organization called Humanitarian Efforts for African Learning, a 501c3 organization focused on providing resources and scholarships to an all-girls school in Kajiado, Kenya. She taught as an adjunct faculty member at Glendale Community College and instructed as a teaching assistant at Arizona State University. Her decade-plus experience in education as a public school teacher, adjunct faculty member, and several training and development roles in higher education have fueled her passion for lifelong learning. Emily’s research interests focus on social-emotional topics, organizational leadership, faculty needs, and faculty development resource projects.

Zoann Murphy started on her journey to her PhD in General Psychology at Legacy NCU (now NU) in 2017. She likes to say she is on the “turtle track” to degree completion! Beyond her courses, she considers it an honor to participate in The Commons both as a student and as a student steward for the Disabled Voices Forum; she has won the quarterly Commons Award 12 times acknowledging her support of her fellow students in the various Forums. Zoann is a member of the Psychology Department’s Student Advisory Committee which has given her the opportunity to contribute a student perspective on the activities in NCU/NU’s Psychology Department.
Zoann was asked to give presentations of her student paper “To Disclose or Not to Disclose: Disability Status of Graduate Students in Online Degree Programs” at NCU’s School of Social and Behavioral Sciences Virtual Student Conference in 2021 and at NCU’s Department of Education Diversity Committee Brown Bag Session in 2022. In 2021, she began a university-wide research project with Dr. Tara Lehan of National University’s Strategic Research Office and Dr. Vera Dolan and Dr. Lisa St. Louis. That project, “Faculty Perceptions and Experiences Working with Online Students with Disabilities,” was completed in 2023 and is being considered for publication. She was the lead presenter for a poster presentation of the research at the national AHEAD Equity and Excellence conference in July 2023. In February 2024, she presented the research findings at the first NU JFK School of Psychology and Social Science Student Research Conference.
Dr. Tiffany A. Pringle completed her EdD at NCU/NU and has been highly active with various scholarly and professional endeavors. Dr. Pringle is the President of the Inspire Consulting & Management Group, Maximizing Your Human Potential www.inspirecmg.com. In addition to the articles on her website, she has written a few books, including: Inspired To Win: 7 Strategies To Stand Out And Win In Any Organization: Pringle, Tiffany Anisette: 9798621902070: Amazon.com: Books. Dr. Pringle has written an article for NCU, has been a podcast guest for the School of Business and Education, and has delivered a few webinars: Fully Engaged Learning Using Virtual Tools, Digital Detoxing, and Zooming Your Way to Success. Lastly, she has recently partnered with the American College of Education to provide accredited courses for their degree programs.
John Wengel, Ph.D, has had a successful ongoing scholarly journey and is now being published in the Business and Professional Communication Quarterly! Dr. Wengel has had 23 years in religious education and went back to Northcentral University, where he received his Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership. His dissertation led him to write about Cultural Intelligence and Trust in Global Virtual teams. With the help of several people, Dr. Wengel was encouraged to publish his scholarly research. He thanks NCU (NU) for all the help in making this possible. Congrats to you, Dr. Wengel!
Be Ready for Changes When Presenting at A Conference

In August of 2021, the Western Association of Colleges and Schools (WASC) emailed me with a call for proposals for their annual Senior College and University Commission conference to be held in April 2022 in San Francisco. The theme for the conference was Equity & Excellence in Action. At the time, two of my doctoral candidates, Kelly Krenkel and Maribel Jimenez, were finishing their dissertations on Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs). I reached out to Kelly and Maribel to see if they would be interested in submitting a proposal, and I would help them with the process and co-presentation. They both agreed. We submitted a proposal for an eighteen-minute “Spark Presentation.”
Kelly’s was entitled:
Cultural and Leadership Challenges Academic Administrators Faced in a Hispanic-Serving University During Regional Accreditation Reaffirmation
And Maribel’s was entitled:
Higher Education Leaders Incorporating Servingness in Strategic Planning at Hispanic Serving Institutions: A Narrative Inquiry
The WASC peer review committee accepted both proposals for an eighteen-minute Spark Presentation.
We then went on to develop the separate eighteen-minute presentations and submitted them to WASC. In mid-March of 2022, with the presentations ready to go, WASC reached out to us and asked, instead of doing two presentations, if we could combine them and do a one-hour presentation. How can you say no? So, it was back to the drawing board.
I am very proud of the way that both Kelly and Maribel rose to the challenge to combine and lengthen their presentation. We also conducted rehearsals to work out any issues, including timing. The presentation was well received. Kelly and Maribel are excellent presenters, and there were requests from several in the audience for copies of their presentation.
The caveat here is to prepare for the unexpected when planning to present at a conference.
Post Script. Maribel Jimenz is now Dr. Maribel Jimenez and Kelly Krenkel is preparing for her oral defense. Kelly had to delay her defense due in part to a new arrival in their family, a baby boy.
Dr. James Gigliello, NU Alumnus of the year for 2020, graduated in 2018 after completing a PhD in Psychology with a Gender Diversity specialization. He returned to get a post grad certificate in Marriage and Family Therapy for the LGBTQ communities. Dr. Gigliello's research based off of his dissertation was published in the peer reviewed Journal of AIDS and Clinical Research in December 2019. It has been cited in various research articles. That research has also been presented numerous times in various venues in Florida such as the state health department, various advisory boards and HIV stigma organizations throughout Florida. It was mentioned at the National HIV Stigma Conference at Howard University and at the U.N. The American Psychological Association accepted his work to be presented through two posters in 2020 and 2021 based off that research within Division 44 of the National Convention. James has presented numerous times at NU on various topics, and including a webinar on how to get your dissertation/research published entitled The Ins and Outs of Publishing Your Dissertation Research. Dr. Gigliello is currently an online professor at St Josephs and Southern New Hampshire Universities
Edited Book Produced by an NU Graduate
Dr. Sara Clemm von Hohenberg, an NU alumna, edited and produced a timely book on educator dispositions. NU SOE faculty members Dr. Amy E. Lyn and Dr. Maggie Broderick contributed a chapter to the book.
Spotlight on Novia Reid - Published Author and Presenter
Novia Reid is a PhD candidate in the NU SSBS Department of Marriage and Family Sciences. She is a native of Jamaica but now resides in South Florida. Several years ago, Novia lived abroad in South Korea, where she worked as a missionary teacher. She feels that during that experience, God affirmed her purpose. As a result, Novia helps couples heal from diverse and complex challenges, especially infidelity, and is the founder of Regain Your Core which empowers women to regain their identities. Novia loves writing articles but dreads editing, and and has authored three self-published books. Her priorities are her spiritual walk with God, family, purpose, health, and living her best life, which includes traveling and being a great aunt.
