It was included to offer you an opportunity to step away from your immersion in the subject matter of this course and try to analyze a literature review using an ‘outsider perspective.’ Use this article to focus on the delivery style and synthesis in the literature review, as opposed to the subject matter of the study.

This article provides an example not only of a well-articulated review of the literature, but also an example of the use of a theory as an overarching lens toward a research study. Specifically, systems theory is used as a lens to consider cybercrime.

Williams, M. L., Levi, M., Burnap, P., & Gundur, R. V. (2019). Under the corporate radar: Examining insider business cybercrime victimization through an application of routine activities theory. Deviant Behavior, 40(9), 1119–1131.
This article provides a good example of the deliberate application of a theory to support the authors’ research. This is key to a literature review and to any scholarly work. This study uses a different theory to explain cybercrime. This study, when combined with the study above, provides an example of how different researchers can use different theories to explain the same phenomenon.
