The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) was designed to protect the privacy of student education records, thus limits as set on the disclosure of education and additional measures are needed to protect personally identifiable information. The Act covers all education institutions receiving financial aid funding and applies to all student education records identified as "official", including admissions records, academic records, and financial aid records.
