DissertationKrathwohl, D. R. (2012). Dissertation. In N. J. Salkind (Ed.), Encyclopedia of research design (pp. 377–379). SAGE.
This brief chapter discusses the purpose of the dissertation within your program of study, the critical role of the problem statement in defining interest in the study as well as driving the flow of the action plan and serving as the basis of logical reasoning and making connections (i.e., alignment) in all phases of the study. The chapter also provides a high-level summary of the roles and purposes of the five chapters of the traditional dissertation model. Although the EdD dissertation-in-practice is three sections rather than five chapters, similar concepts apply. In Week Two, you will learn the difference in focus and scope of PhD and EdD dissertation research. That difference, however, does not suggest that the process of the research is different nor is there a different expectation of rigor.
